I had braces as a kid, but my teeth--and jaw--shifted,so that now I have a slight underbite and moderate teeth crowding. In the days when I got braces, the retainer was not emphasized as something to wear for very long. (I don't even remember how long I wore mine).

Nowadays, of course, wearing a retainer is what keeps the teeth from shifting from the position they were in when orthodontic treatment was completed. I have been in braces for 6 weeks and plan at the end in 2 years, to wear the retainer for life. I know someone with a lower retainer wire behind the teeth. I may ask for this, although I have heard that it makes flossing a little more complicated.
