I got my braces of four years ago and because of a combination of my poor retainer wear and what I think was a easy come easy go attitude of my orthodontist, I'm about to embark on another two years of braces. To make matters worse, I wore my braces for 15 months initially and this ortho says that he'd be happy if 2 years was the max. You could say that retention is important.
