I don't know anyone who got braces for a second time, but I've met a ton of people who had braces as kids and now their teeth are crooked again. So I think relapse is pretty common. One friend told me that she wore braces for 2 years because she had a large gap between her front teeth, and the gap opened up again almost immediately after she got the braces off (like, within a month). Yikes! Two people I met have a permanent wire behind their bottom row of teeth, and that seems to be working well (their top teeth have shifted but the wire has kept the bottom ones in line--I've never seen the same type of wire behind the top teeth so I don't know if that can be done or not). I guess it's some kind of permanent retainer. I don't know what they're called, but I want one when I get my braces off! Does anybody know anything about those? I'm a long way off from that yet, but I want to ask my ortho for one when the time comes.
