Tenny -- I had my braces for 3 months or so and then had my headgear placed. I had a couple of weeks to fret about it, and I DID. My husband has been SOOOO good about it. Mine is the facebow kind with an overhead strap. If I wear it all the time at home, I can get in most of the hours. But it does take some will-power at first. I have a few friends who don't mind seeing me in it, and I will gradually expand that circle until I can wear it at their homes as well. I think I can get along without going completely public with it. It will be ok, Tenny, I'm sure you can do it.
