I think it is important to wear them as much as possible, without going over the prescribed time.
I work in a highly professional environment, in a management position, and I made every effort to wear them all the time. It really isn't a huge inconvenience, but if I had a big meeting where I was the major speaker, I did take them out prior.
Once you are used to them, it isn't a big deal. I don't know if he was trying to scare you, or just emphasize the importance. I remember reading somewhere that the teeth need 16 hours a day of force to move, and anything less they will remain static or regress.
