I know, orthodontics is really a lot harder in certain professions like modeling and acting. I'm a model/actress and a theatre arts major, so I've run into this problem too. What I usually do is remove my elastics for auditions and performances, but wear them during rehersals and time backstage. I recently expressed some honest concern to my ortho about wearing my HG 12+ hours a day, so he gave me jasoer jumpers and made them removable instead of fixed and told me to wear the jasper jumpers 16+ hours a day, and now I only need the HG 8+ hours a day, which is a big relief, because I can most likely get in all the hours when I sleep or when I'm in my dorm. So now the only challenge is giving a big speech on my HG to my roommates, but hopefully no one else will see it.
