My public eating rule is I stick with things I can eat with a spoon, fork or a straw. Nothing I have to bite into due to the gunk factor. Smoothies are good, soup is fine, sandwiches no. Salads are the worst. I also tell people I know that I have a gunk problem but that isn't comfortable with acquaintances or business lunches. It can really look gross, ruins the appetites of others.
