Subject: Retainer Problems

Hi, I just got my top braces off and got a clear (Essix) retainer the same day. It makes it really hard to say certain consonants, like s's and ch's, and I'm not sure if this is normal or not. It seems like it's because on the inside, there is a space between the plastic and my gums. Or something like that.

Also, my teeth have been hurting non-stop since I got the braces off. I'm not sure whether it's the retainer or something, but they are really sore and feel almost loose. Is this normal??

Another thing, with the clear retainer in, I can't really bite down very much, only my back molars touch each other so it's hard to keep my lips together.

So I'm wondering, are these problems normal, or is there something I can do about them? Would a Hawley retainer (with the metal wire in the front) be a better choice?
