>I have Essix retainers. They never did hurt, though they felt tight, like braces. Now the ortho is adjusting them to fine-tune the bite, my teeth are very sore indeed! Yes, your teeth will remain loose for a while--that's the purpose of the retainer, to hold the teeth in position until they set in the bone. The speech problems will abate soon with practice. I do get spit bubbles between my teeth and the retainers, so there is some play in there. The retainers feel cushiony, and don't provide a bite for chewing, but I never felt I couldn't close my lips. I wear them 24/7 except for eating/cleaning and will for months and months. I had an appt. a month after debanding/retainers to check them. But if you are miserable, call and ask to get in sooner; why suffer? Sometimes a person just needs reassurance that all is as it should be, even if uncomfortable is what it should be!
