The wax needs to be warmed with your fingers and then pressed very firmly around the hook and bracket: don't worry, it won't harm or move the bracket, and it will stay on when you eat (if you want) and come out in a clump when you pull it off with your fingernail or brush your teeth. It is bee's wax; if you swallow it, no harm done. I slept in wax often; no sense in suffering cuts to the lining of your mouth if you don't have to. Use as much as you need. It will get better.
