My initial consultation was much like the one that Dr Rick described that he does. I felt comfortable that I had enough knowledge to move forward confidently and that my questions were answered. I did my special ortho x-rays before the consultation, which I think helped in determining how to approach my case.

What really sent me into a tailspin was that after I got the braces on, I had a consultation with a Periodontist to check my gum health and determine implants viability to replace missing upper right molars in the future. I have never had gum disease and he said my gums were in great shape, but he got out his verbal Gatling gun and blasted my ortho's approach in using braces only and not jaw surgery. He didn't see any of the x-rays and he didn't talk to her, but based his opinion only on my un-expert description of what she was doing with the ortho treatment. (Maybe there's some sort of pecking order in dentistry and the perios look down on the orthos.)

I was really upset and finally was able to talk to my orthodontist and she spent almost an hour reviewing what she was doing and reassuring me that it was a conservative approach that was likely to have very good results. Needless to say, when braces are finished in 2 years, I intend to see a different perio than the Disaster Master.

Best to you on your selection of an orthodontist!
