When I first went to the orthodontist I was convinced that he would be able to correct the problems I have been having with my jaw. He explained to me that neither fixing my overbite or extracting my wisdom teeth would have any positive impact on my jaw. He basically said that if that was my primary concern then maybe I should deal with that first. He gave me the estimate of time and money for orthodontics and said he'd leave it with me to think about. He said I could always choose orthodontics sometime in the future if I didn't feel comfortable going ahead with it now.

I'm guessing that how braces affect your TMJ has to do with what's causing it. I've finally discovered that my TMJ disorder is caused from a whiplash about 3 years ago. I did have some jaw soreness right after getting braces on but nothing major till about a week after when I got a really bad jaw ache/headache. I can't say that it was totally due to getting braces though because as I'm sure you know, it's not uncommon to feel jaw pain and get a headache without a real reason! Other than that one experience which lasted a couple days (advil liquigels helped)I haven't had it too bad. Honestly, the braces don't make me feel as bad as I was dreading that they would. Sure I have my bad days but they are no more frequent than before getting braces. My recommendation to you would be either going to a TMJ specialist or if you luck out like I did, find an orthodontist who works with one. They should be able to tell you whether or not orthodontics will be beneficial to your TMJ symptoms.
