Talk about deja vu! I'm also a 40 year old male who's finally decided to correct things in my smile I don't like and found a doc who prefers metal and charges an extra $500 for ceramic. And I'm in a professional position and was concerned about the looks of metal and the reactions I'd get.

I haven't had them put on yet, but b-day is in one week and I'm getting metal. A month or two ago I couldn't have imagined myself getting metal but I've been very encouraged by the posts here, the info and pics on archwired.com, and by the reactions of my friends and co-workers when I tell them my plans. Plus, I have better things to do with that extra $500.

I feel like I'm prepared now and know what to expect. I'm not looking forward to the canker sores, marathon flossing sessions, or post-adjustment "pressure," but I'm not dreading negative reactions from people I work with, since they all have said things like "cool" and "good for you!" Many tell me stories of when they had them as a kid (one guy had them for four years, and later suspected that they were left on a little extra time because the ortho was hitting on his single mom).

Have you talked with your friends and co-workers to get their reaction? Also, if you haven't consulted with other orthos, you might want to interview a few more if you still want to find a lower price on ceramics or find someone you're more comfortable with. The first guy I talked to only charged an extra $300 but I felt more comfortable with the other guy so I went with him.

Good luck!
Gary
