I was apprehensive too, but I took it one person at a time, starting with the people I suspected would be the most supportive. After the first 2 or 3 responses -- all very positive -- I've been pretty casual about telling anyone who'd listen, even prospective dates. They are either impressed that I'm making the effort to improve my dental health (and my smile), or they don't have much of a reaction at all, indicating that for most people it's not going to be a big deal. Nobody's snickered, gasped, guffawed, winced, or tried to talk me out of it.
