I was surprised to learn that most people, when I told them I was getting braces, said "why?" I don't know if they just figured that at my age (47) what's the point, or if they didn't think my teeth were as bad as I think they are.

Other than that, I've heard no negative comments at all.

I wish I'd done this 20 years ago, but I think there was a part of me that was afraid to admit I knew my teeth were crooked, if that makes any sense -- kind of like getting braces then announces it to the world. I got over that, though.

I'm not sure what your situation is, but if you've spent your life feeling self-conscious about your teeth like I have, feeling self-conscious about braces is not a big deal at all.
