Although I imagine the idea has very little appeal, if I were you I would be asking him to put the braces back on again to close up the gaps. After they come off, ask for a retainer that will hold them in place. As others have said, either a hawley or an essix. It seems kind of obvious that a bonded 2+2 retainer is not going to retain anything other than the four front teeth.

I think he's in dream land if he says the gaps will close up by themselves. I know you are in a difficult situation having had treatment on the NHS, it's a little different from having not got what you paid for.

Personally I would be questioning the competence and professionalism of the guy but there are different issues involved when treatment is funded by the NHS.
