Subject: Cheek biting habit – any advice? Dr. Rick?

Hi all. I will get braces in a couple of weeks. I’m very well informed about the corrections I need. Whit the exception of one issue:
My molars don’t touch when I bite down. According to my ortho my upper molars never grew down enough because they were hindered by the pressure of my cheeks. I’m biting my cheeks while sleeping. As fare as I know my molars never will come down by themselves unless I get rid of this habit. The recurrent pressure from the soft tissue will hold them back.
Anyway, my ortho plans to bring my upper molars down with elastics. Ok, guess that’ll work. And I can imagine that retainers will be able to hold the molars in place afterwards.
But what about my cheek-biting-habit? Will I be in "danger" to bite my cheeks more seriously whit all my molars touching? Or is there a chance to get rid of my habit?

Does anybody have a similar problem?

Any suggestions from the experts? Dr. Rick?

Helen
