I was only one of two girls in my physics classes in undergrad - and the only American-born to boot!

When I switched professions, I was the only girl working in technology in my office. Up until three years ago when they hired a lovely Russian woman as a database administrator.

Dont let your own fears get in the way (I know easier said than done)- but especially as these fears are based on perceptions and not on merit or ability. What do you have to loose? Imagine the end result - and if you really want that - you'll find a way to get there, it may not be the most conventional way or on the pre-defined timetable everyone else seems to follow, but heck their your dreams, you can choose the time and the path to get to them.

Last but not least, life has a weird way of giving you strange coincidences, or opportunities at the moments you least expect them. Keep an eye out for them in your research. You never know! Best of luck in finding what fulfills you.
