Some people are only required to wear their retainers at night for two or so years, but unfortuately, most people don't even follow those directions. I believe most orthodontists advise wearing the retainer at night for the rest of your life.

After you get your braces off, you will likely be told to wear your retainers all the time for several minutes except when eating and brushing. And after that, you'll wear them at night.

As far as relapse, I think that also depends on a number of factors. I suppose it could be quick or it may take awhile. If you go to the main archwire site and read the "Orthodontic Woes" pages- I believe there is one about someone whose orthodontist was moving away and removed her braces too soon, before her treatment was over. A day or two after her braces were removed, her gaps had reappeared.

I don't know. Just wear your retainers!
