I know exactly how you feel! i am now 16 and got my braces on a few months b4 my sweet 16.(hang in with the story it serves a purpose...lol) i have always known i needed them but my parents never got around to it. Until they found out my brother needed orthodontic work...and THEN i was finally going to get them. Like u, i was like i want invasilign. And i asked my orthodontist about it and he said yes i was a candidate. But he wanted to explain a few things. It was a good amount of money to have them and most of his patients have to get regular braces on for a few months at the end of their treatment. He said that a better choice would be to get ceramic braces. I was like NO WAY!
So on the way home i asked my mom if i could get invasilign and she said it was too much money and i would just have to get the ceramic braces. I got home and cried and cried, and called my boyfriend and cried and cried some more. It almost wasnt as much of having to get the braces as much as it was my parents. I have been told since i was very little that i would need braces. And i always asked my mom and she said we will get around to it. I mean its not like we didnt have the money or the health insurance, my mom works for a health insurance company and we have always had the money. My sister got hers when she was 12, my brother got his when he was 11, and i got mine when i was 15 almost 16. It just made me feel pretty unloved to tell u the truth, and still does. I basically finally got mine because they were convient for my parents, oh and i am the middle child.
So i finally went in and got my braces, only the top first. 6 ceramic in the front and 3 metal brackets on each side. I was not happy about the metal, but then saw that u couldnt see them and got over it. But i freaked out about how i looked and such, and had to go to school. I went into class and gave my french teacher my note and took my seat. Everyone kinds looked at me and i smiled and i got a suprise. Several people said they looked good! The rest of the day went pretty much the same.
And then after a few months i went in to get my bottom braces on, and they were silver! i almost cried right then in there. I got them on and was like omg! But naturally i got over it.
Basically what this whole thing was about is your not alone. Getting some silver braces isnt the end of the world as i thought it would be at first, people are totally ok with all of it,and most people dont notice i have braces unless i smile really big. Hun your life is not over i promise! I thought exactly liek u when i found out, and now i almost like my braces, kinda crazy! I even went for hot pink on my lowers for the summer, but am going back before school to get them changed so they are a little less noticeable. And i went to prom this year, my b/f was a senior, and i got professional pictures and u cant see my braces AT ALL!
And the biggest pay off is like my day today. I had an ortho appointment and he engadged my last tooth to the archwire and my bottom teeth are now straight! its so amazing and makes this all worth while!
Its actually pretty nice to know there are other teens on this board. At first i thought everyone would get mad at me because i was only 16. The truth is there isnt anything like this out there that is for teens. And the people are wonderful!
