I won't share how I feel about "kids these days," as it were, because I don't believe this forum is an appropriate place to expres my feelings on the matter. I, too, wish I'd had braces at 16 or earlier, but like many here, my family circumstances were not such that it was feasible then. Then again, I don't regret the fact that this means I'm wearing braces as an adult.

ImReallyTired, I apologize for the behavior of some of the people on this forum (if you're even still here - who would be after all this abuse?). Although I'm disappointed you didn't receive the warm welcome most people do, if you choose to stick around anyway I hope you'll find more empathy and understanding here after you get over the initial shock of wearing braces (you may not believe it now, but you will, and it doesn't take long). Many of us went through the same emotional roller-coaster you're on now - I don't think "I want the braces no-one can see, even if they're more expensive" is any less valid a way of expressing your feelings than the more common "I hate these things, get them off, even if it means I've wasted hundreds of dollars!" What you're seeing here may be people who are jealous of you - for being young, getting braces early and for having someone else to pay for it. You'll probably find that a majority of negative reactions to your braces - if you get any (more) at all - are due to jealousy.

It's unfortunate that there isn't a forum for the younger set - 15-20 or so - who are less adaptable and more socially conscious than the younger kids who get braces, but don't have to face all of the same issues (cost, work, serious dating) as many of the people here. With the number of kids in this age bracket on the web and in braces, I'd be surprised if there isn't some sort of community.

If you really want to flame a kid who's getting a free ride (yes, my parents/insurance are paying for mine, though in large part due to money freed up by a scholarship I earned), try me - I can take it.

Katie
