Bobby was from a broken home. His mother was out working day and night to support her little family and Bobby was all alone as a small child constantly. It's true that after he began playing chess he went ot chess clubs, stayed at Jack Collins home, but he had nothing even approximating a normal stable family life. It's no wonder he had trouble trusting other people.

His mom had a favorable view of the U.S.S.R. because she had left-wing political views and she had studied there in the 30s. No doubt Bobby was excited to visit the Soviet Union in 1958 as US Champion, because the Soviets had the best players, but they did not treat him very respectfully, and negative articles about his character began to appear in the Russian press. This turned Bobby into a lifelong hater of the Soviet government and chess establishment. After Curacao 1962, who could blame him?
