Sam (sometimes Ishmael) Sloan is a New York cabdriver, former stock
broker, past-president of the Berkeley Sexual Freedom League, Chairman
in deed of the American Chess Society, flee in the shag of FIDE,
father of 8 children - and as unpaid journalist the most entertaining
village jester of the Internet-chess. Yearly, he places about a
thousand messages in various newsgroups and on his own websites
(www.samsloan.com, www.anusha.com, www.ishipress.com) - impenetrable
text-jungles about chess and everything besides chess; there are more
naked women than diagrams on his site. He complains, he brags. A
raging polemicist, he remains unperturbed by the stream of sarcasm
that continually comes his way. But that�fs what you get when you do
not live in Ivory Towers, or as the Dutch expression goes: �gTall
trees catch a lot of wind�h - the FBI is keeping an eye on him; the
American Chess society is conspiring against him; he has been an actor
in a Japanese cult-movie; he often played chess with Fischer; was able
to break through all police barricades during the World Trade Center
attack and was thus able to witness with his own eyes that at least
30,000 people had died; escaped from a prison in Afghanistan;
organized sex-orgies en was therefore the most important campaign
target for Ronald Reagan during his quest to become governor of
California. His grandmother�fs sister was saved from the Titanic, and
his mother, his first wife as well as a daughter were all kidnapped.
His mother was even kidnapped for a second time (by his mean younger
brother), and the daughter, Shamema, was kidnapped by a conspiracy
comprising members of the FBI, American lawyers and judges, and a
group of religious fundamentalists from Sri Lanka. His wife,
Honzagool, has been held captive for over 20 years now in her own
country, Pakistan, by a group associated with Osama bin Laden. The
news was all over Pakistani newspapers.
Sloan has sworn to never bed a woman for reasons other than to
impregnate her, and every day he runs into one who is willing to do
so. Nonetheless, he has been charged with sexual intimidation during a
chess game - apparently he propositioned to his opponent. Sloan is in
his mid-fifties and the girl was 16.
Sloan is not a bad writer, sometimes he is witty, and once in a while
he has a great scoop. He managed to get through to Raymond Weinstein,
an American top-player who disappeared about 30 years ago, who is
rumored to have committed a murder and currently resides in an
institution (both facts are true; check de link Raymond Weinstein); he
keeps a hawk�fs eye on the faux pas of FIDE and its president
Iljoemzhinov, and he was the first person who was able to announce
that Bobby Fischer was the offspring of a Hungarian Jew by the name of
Paul Nemenyi.
I had wanted to write about Sam Sloan before he celebrated his biggest
scoop in December by publishing on the Internet that the 23-year old
Hungarian top grandmaster Peter Leko had died in a car accident. Sloan
had heard it through the grapevine, and in order to be the Important
Sam Sloan Who Knew the Facts First, he obeyed the journalistic tenet
that when one�fs moronic nephew says that there are tap-dancing
elephants at the South Pole, you simply cannot submit such a newsbyte
to destructive fact-checking. The entire chess community grieved all
morning - and sighed a sigh of relief when Leko announced that he was
sleeping and had just gotten up. Which caused Sloan to delicately
remark that Topalov, Leko�fs replacement in the worldchampion cycle,
must be terribly disappointed.
Not that Leko is impervious to accidents.
