Hello, I was reading the archives and read the whole long string on Ivan's use of the tug toy, but never saw anyone post what he does to get the dog to bring it back etc. Maybe I missed it and it was in another thread, but I'll throw the answer out anyway. Tug toy, something you can hold while the dog is biting without your fingers getting bit and the dog can easily grip, like french ring style tugs. He gets the dog excited about the tug, lets it bite, fights with it some like you would in protection but a miniature version. He makes it active and fun enough that the dog is in very high drive like protection, this is how he keeps tons of drive in his obedience, by exciting themwith the tug, asking for precision, then rewarding with the tug. The dog outs off the tug, rebites, outs, is asked to do something else like continue healing (perfectly or is corrected to place). Rarely does the dog actually get to go fetch the toy, he wants the dog to feel rewarded by playing WITH you. When the dog gets all his fun by playing with you, why would you have to have long lines to get him to bring the toy to you? The dogs fly back to you for more. Whoever it is on this list that is training with Ivan tell him hi from Holly and that his west coast club misses him immensely!
