Watching the Dobermans at the regionals, I remembered about this and thought I would ask for any input.

A lot of what I and others, that have been in the sport WAAAAAAAY longer than I have (even GSDers), thought might cause dogs to loose grip on the longbite is those damn feet! It seems that often the Dobermans 'lead' with their feet - you've seen it, I've seen it... it is just what a lot of them do - sort of 'grabbing' their opponent stuff - neither actually 'good' or 'bad' in an actual protection scenario, but in competition in the sports, can be a bit of an issue. It is obvious in some dogs that they are trying to knock down the opponent as well but either way, they throw their longbites off it seems... they sort of 'bounce' or even distance themselves slightly with their legs and it backs them up just ever so slightly and they can loose it, particularly if their grips are the strongest but I have seen it on dogs with hard grips too.

Anyway, is it just something we are going to have to 'deal with' and ignore in the sport - just a 'Doberman thing' or is there, has there, been any sort of successful techiniques anyone knows of that will teach the dogs to lead with their faces instead of feet?

I think we might do a lot of 'teaching' of the use of the feet as puppies when working a dog in prey and down low. Dobermans just seem to do better worked higher and not beginning to learn to use those feet to 'bat' at the rag or tug near the ground, but I don't know if that is really it as much as a possible potentiator of a breed characteristic... Sort of like old Louis must have found a freaking BOXER in that dog pound!
