I've got the food refusal exercise down pretty ggod with Belle Star, the 8 year old American Bulldog I'm training in Mondio.

Actually I'm suggesting that food as a reward is more potent with ABs than other breeds. My experience with dog sports is much greater in weight pull than in protection sport, let me share with you all how Belle is rewarded when she competes in the IWPA (International Weight Pull Assoc.)...

Of course IWPA does not allow food rewards during a weight pull and for 45 minutes afterwards. The weight pull may last 4 hours or more. The dog will pull dozens of times during the weight pull proper. Despite all this work and hours without food, Belle still pulls for a food reward. This is because she enters the weight pull hungry, before she straps on the harness she stuffs her nose into a bag full of chopped steak, and gets a smell, only a smell. Gallons of drool cascade from her mouth after the smell. She knows that if she pulls her heart out during the competition, then 45 minutes after the harness comes off, she gets the steak. If she doesn't pull hard each and every time she's up to bat, she gets no meal that day.

I will wean her off food for all the OB exrcises in her Mondio Brevet this fall, but after it is all over she will get a bag of steak, perhaps with chunks of lobster and cheese mixed in, possibly seasoned with dill and/or garlic. This will be her motivation. She is a Bulldog. She will walk to hell and back for a surf and turf dinner seasoned just right.
