The answer I received when I asked two friends of mine who are also fr/mr competitors and judges was that they use FR as the foundation for MR.

One thing if you were considering both sports (IMO) is that I would NOT teach the backward heel per se. In Mondio that could be a huge problem on the Defense. You could either teach your dog to circle you, or simply heel as normal. It may not look as pretty, but it is not going to lose you any points unless your dog is slow to bite.

Certainly you could in fact teach the backward heel.. but i have found that my friends in france who compete at the world ch. level have concentrated almost solely on MR after attaining the FR 3, and had to retrain for the defense.

It goes w/o saying that you have to have a very superior retrieve in MR, whereas you could in essence skate by in FR with just knowing the sock ball, etc.

In our club we train for both. We do one face attack FR style, then maybe one with bottles, etc. We do the FR Defense and also do a Mondio type defense. So basically the dog is trained under the same basics, just with some environmental additions and the like...

I wont ramble on any more ... lol I will step back and let others answer as well.. :)

-Mark
