Ushta
There is no easy answer.

By linguistical evidence based on the Rig Vedas Zarathushtra has to be dated at least several hundred years prioe to 1500BC. Considering specially the closeness of the language and the fact that at least one family and two personnages seem to be alive at the time of composition in both the Gathas and Rig Veda.

However, Iranian astronomers basing themselves on one tradition, have determined, by Astronomical observation, based on the story of the tradition, that one possible date for Zarathushtra is around 1738 BC.

In the meantime Vedic scholars also basing themselves in astronomical data furnished in the RigVeda place the Vedas circa 6500 to 7500BC and Zarathushtra and the Gathas, held by some to be a Fith Veda, somewhere around that time.

Archeologically speaking, the finding of a Zarathushti Fire Temple in Okhbasht in the Old Soviet Union is dated circa 2000 BC . so we can see that the data while not totally agreeing tend to support a very early date for the Manthran

When did it start we are not sure but definitely the evidence seems to be overwhelming that it is contemporary with the Rig Veda and thus prior to 1500 BC probably several centuries before.

As to when it ended Zoroastrianism or Mazdayasna is a live religion that is attempting a come back It has never died.
