I try and put a white light eminating outwards - although am unsure how I would do that and keep it there all the time. I also do something similar and call on my guardian angel (and wow is he great) when I am feeling like there is something around that I don't want there... This is normally not when I am meditating or trying to connect with spirit, but just of a normal time (does that make sense?).
