SITE’S SET ON TARGET OF FEWER CARS
-----------------------------------------------------------
Target 2, the international, Metro-led project to develop sustainable transport options that encourage changes in people’s travel behaviour and alternatives to the private car, has a new web site today at www.eu-target.net.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Bringing together five European partners, Yorkshire & Humberside, Bremen in Germany; Goteborg in Sweden; Odense in Denmark and the Euregio Scheldemond in Flanders and the southern Netherlands, Target 2 aims to develop new transport solutions to be integrated into mobility management strategies.
-----------------------------------------------------------
“Mobility Management covers a range of transport options designed to meet the different aspects of personal, leisure and business transport needs,” explained Metro’s Project Coordinator Alison Pilling.
-----------------------------------------------------------
“These measures, which can include travel plans, personalised travel marketing and transport information, alternative travel incentives such as cycling and walking initiatives and better access for pedestrians, provide people with options to substitute what would otherwise be car journeys.
-----------------------------------------------------------
“This new web site will help the Target 2 partners to learn from each other, exchange and disseminate ideas.”
-----------------------------------------------------------
Target 2 has five key work areas:
Workplaces - working with firms to develop travel options that minimise the environmental impacts of business-generated travel.
Mobility Education - evaluating safe transport to school and developing positive attitudes to sustainable transport modes for young people.
Transport and Leisure - developing partnerships to reduce car travel to a range of urban and rural visitor attractions.
City Living - developing integrated transport modes that offer urban dwellers mobility options without needing a private car.
Transnational Arena - maximising the benefits of international co-operation and learning which facilitates information gathering, exchange of experience and fast-track development of mobility management activity.
-----------------------------------------------------------
As part of its Target 2 work, Metro led a recent NHS Travel Plan Seminar attended by 40 representatives from the region’s Hospital, Primary Care and Mental Health Trusts. Topics discussed included Transport and Health in West Yorkshire, managed hospital car parking systems and travel planning for employees.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Five South Yorkshire schools were awarded SAFEMark this year as part of Target 2 and in West Yorkshire John Smeaton School in Leeds became the first to achieve the Award through Metro’s ‘Delivering Safe Transport to Schools’ scheme. Another eight West Yorkshire high schools are currently working towards SAFEMark.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Last summer’s popular cycle bus service, which thanks to a specially designed trailer, enabled families from West Yorkshire to transport their cycles into the heart of the Yorkshire Dales National Park, was also a Target 2 initiative.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Future Target 2 aims for Metro include working on travel plans with the 100 plus interested companies in West Yorkshire, developing a public transport and visitor attraction smartcard, setting up fully integrated public transport initiatives for city centre residents and improving access to jobs and other services for socially disadvantaged communities through public transport.
-----------------------------------------------------------
And in mid January, Target 2’s first Thematic Seminar about Sustainable Leisure Travel will take place in Bruges, hosted by the Euregio Scheldemond partner.

Notes for Editors
-----------------------------------------------------------
The eight West Yorkshire high schools currently working towards SAFEMark Awards are Crofton High and Thomas a Beckett in the Wakefield District, Brighouse and Ryburn in Calderdale, Colne Valley in Kirklees, Yorkshire Martyrs and Beck Foot in Bradford and Pudsey Grangefield in Leeds.
-----------------------------------------------------------
As well as coordinating the overall project, Metro leads the UK’s Yorkshire and Humberside partnership of eight local authorities and a number of other bodies including the Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority and Carplus.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Target 2 is supported by the Yorkshire and Humber Assembly and Yorkshire Forward.
