Eulogy for Eugene Chih-Chiang Huang

At the age of 10, Eugene was confronted by the greatest fear of his life: Being looked upon as a fool. Not even fully understood its significance, he made the decision then to not ever look like a fool. At the age of 38, Eugene realized that Christ had unshackled him from the binding of his fear and his pursuit of living with Christ became dead serious. In the period between his 10th and 38th years, Eugene had tried to become an engineer, a counselor, a pastor and anybody generally admirable. After his ¡§conversion experience¡¨, Eugene finally became Eugene.

¡§I can only be me,¡¨ Eugene deeply believed, ¡§But I can also only become who I am going to become. For me, the miracle of the cross is that who I am and whom I am going to become are finally at peace.¡¨

In his post seminary years, Eugene¡¦s expression of his faith became very reflective and introspective. He once explained why he had given up on becoming a minister, ¡§I just can¡¦t preach.¡¨ Being saved by Christ was such an existential experience that Eugene just couldn¡¦t sermonize it. Experiencing Christ was so intimate to him that he cherished it in an almost secretive manner, and all he could do was to live on by drawing from that intimacy.

Come to think of it, I had never heard Eugene inquiring any other person, ¡§Have you received Jesus Christ as your personal savior?¡¨ It is simply a question not answerable with words. When I think about the way Eugene had always taken up his freedom to choose, had refused to look upon himself as a victim, had unreservedly valued himself and had fought against withholding love, I think he was giving his best at saying a big ¡§yes¡¨ to the question of his salvation.

Well Eugene, on saying that ¡§yes¡¨, I think you did all right.
