SJ: Make-up, Band-Aid, or Surgery

It would probably look like, after all the talk about how things can go wrong in the church, that I believe churches are full of evil people who messes things up for everyone. That it not the case. Like a couple of you mentioned in your reply, I also feel that the people in our church is great and I love a lot of them very much. It’s not a problem with who are the evil ones in our church.

I think it is very important for us to realize that church, like a person, is an organic entity. It is no wonder that even in the Bible, the image of a body with Christ as her head is used to resemble the church. And like a person, a church may have some blemishes, or even illnesses. When a person gets sick, we may be able to say that he or she hasn’t been taking good care of his/herself. Yet the underlying problem is that we are all susceptible to illness. Such is the case for the church also. When someone dear to us gets sick, it makes more sense for us to think about how would he/she get well, than to be pre-occupied with thinking about how he/she messes up and deserves to suffer -- so shall we care for a church that is in trouble.

If someone dear to us has freckles on his/her face, we may suggest the use of some cosmetics to cover them up (though personally I think freckles are cute). But it he/she has a cut or bruise, putting on make-up to cover up the problem may not be the best idea. It may be better for us to bandage up the wound or put ice pack on the bruise.

If someone has a cancerous growth, then Band-Aids and ice packs will not be able to take care of the problem. Surgery may be required, and you can’t just grab anyone who is willing to perform the procedure. Someone has to be properly trained, prepared and supported to do the job.

What do we need today? Make-up? Band-Aid? Or surgery?

our church needs open heart surgery. those who believe otherwise must have major blinders on.
