SJ: My Weird Dream (2)

Matthew 7:21-23
“Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and in your name drive out demons and perform many miracles?’ Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!”

This is the second half of my strange dream on 10/01/2002:

We were all taking an intermission after the first part of the “church show”, and all of a sudden the large screen televisions in the church started to show some news programs reporting that great disasters were spreading all over the world. All of us panicked and ran back inside the church for shelter.

This time the interior of the church was more like a great cathedral. The strange thing was that all the crosses in the church had either been taken away or turned upside-down. I asked a few church workers why this was so, but they all looked kind of strange and couldn’t really communicate with me.

Then I saw a second vision: Out of the stone wall at the front part of the church hall came the huge, blood red, flaming face of Satan. Satan reached his face out from the wall to swallow the panicking people into his mouth of flaming fire.

Frightened by this vision, when I was trying to find a place to sit down in the church hall, I sat towards the back of the church, away from where the front wall and next to an also frightened woman.

For some reason, I realized that singing the hymn “Blessed Assurance” could calm my soul down. So I kept singing it and went into a trance. When I came back to consciousness, I discovered that a good number of people, including the woman next to me, had disappeared. I asked a man, “What had just happened.” He pointed to the back wall of the church hall, and there was a huge dark hole with sounds of painful screams coming from within. It seemed that all the non-believers or false believers in the church had been sucked into that depth of hell.

I am still disturbed by my second vision when a woman asked me what she should do. It turned out that she was the church organist, and someone in front of the church was summoning her to go up front and play. I told her to go up front and I would go with her.

As we walked up, I told her about how I got into the trance while singing the hymn, “Blessed Assurance,” and was kept safe while people are taken into the black hole. We agreed that once we got up front, we would lead everyone in singing that hymn.

As we got to the front, I was met by a handsome, well-dressed and charismatic tall man who appeared to be the worship leader. I told him that we should sing, “Blessed Assurance,” but he smiled and said, “Very well, we will sing that one last, but we will sing all these other songs first.” And I haven’t heard of the strange songs that he named.

Out of some kind of desperation, I looked around and saw that there was one cross left close to the altar of the church. I asked someone to bring that cross to me, so that I could hold it up while we sing. The worship leader did not appear to like the idea, and while I got a hold of the cross, he put me in a chock hold.

I glanced over the cross in my hand and realized that it was a rather strange cross. On the horizontal bar there were three little moving pieces that glides along the bar. Two of the little pieces had each a small cross engraved on it. The third piece had a crown engraved on it. Someone had massed up their positions on the bar on purpose so that they were just randomly positioned. All of a sudden I realized that the two pieces with crosses symbolized the two thieves crucified besides Jesus. And the one with the crown symbolized Christ. So, in stead of struggling for air, I put the pieces into the right positions with Christ’s crown in the center. All of a sudden, the man who was choking me got quite upset, but he could hardly lock his arm around my neck, and he had no strength to cut off my air supply. Before I woke up I just kept yelling at him, “This is the cross of Christ, who took away the sins of the world.”

Well, that was a pretty strange dream and the second part, to me, was even more frightening than the first. Yet, I realize that since my baptism in 1991, even though I have been sitting in a church building most of the Sundays, and later on even been serving in all kinds of capacities, I hadn’t really had any assurance that I have been saved from Satan’s kingdom. Not until lately did I realize that merely sitting in a church (as if the building is some kind of magical sanctuary) and going through all kinds of motions (as if my efforts would prove that I am saved) can not give me life.

Life is not about where you are on Sunday morning, nor is it about what jobs you perform at church. It is about, cliché as it may sound, being in an intimate relationship with Christ. Christ is living with me every minute of my life; I don’t need to shout out on the last day, “Lord, Lord, look at what all the good jobs I have done!”
