I just saw this today and I loved it. I'm with you, the violence was rough (didn't see the aformentioned manual castration coming at all and wish I hadn't, period). But I had it on good authority that it was graphic and that I should hold on to my hat.

I totally agree with you on every front and about the acting. Madsen was wasted but then again, he's kind of a poor man's Rourke anyway. Speaking of which, Rourke was incredible and easily the best character of the movie. I still don't get Clive Owen but he was tolerable in this one. I didn't know until you pointed it out that Nikky Katt played the Nazi. That was one of the funnier scenes in the film. Elijah Wood was totally creepy. He's always been kind of wide-eyed man-boy creepy anyway but in this one, he trumps his own creepiness.

As for the women, I liked Rosario Dawson and Jessica Alba but thought that Brittany Murphy was a little too Jessica Rabbit. As for Carla Gugino, it's been a long time coming for that nude scene. She's remarkably stacked! Good to see her!

Loved the film, top to bottom . . . save for the castration. One of the best of the year thus far.
