Subject: Very quick reviews of some films I have seen in the past few months

March of the Penguins - Fantastic! Penguins lead a miserable life and it's documented here. Don't let that drive you a way. It's a fascinating film.

Wedding Crashers - Funniest film of the summer thus far. Vince Vaughn is perhaps the funniest man in film at the moment (though I am eager to see how Steve Carrell pulls of The 40-Year Old Virgin). Owen Wilson is equally funny as is Isla Fisher, Vaughn's psycho girlfriend. Must see.

Land of the Dead - Disgusting fun from George A. Romero. One of the vilest, goriest films I've seen in ages. If you like the "Dead" series, this should please you as well.

The Devil's Rejects - One of my favorite films of the summer thus far. Rob Zombie far exceeds House of 1000 Corpses (save for the long, slow assassination of the cop in the backyard, the film was just silly) with his follow-up. There's a lot of familiarity in this film, too, as Zombie hearkens back to the slasher films of the 70's. He wears the influences on his sleeve, like a badge. So for that, you take it for what it is: a tribute. The blaze of glory ending is fantastic. Zombie has upped his game. Great performances throughout as well.

Bad News Bears - Billy Bob carries Walter Matthau's torch in this film with, well, class. If you can call this character classy, that is. The story stays true to the original with a few modernizations. If you liked the first one, you'll enjoy this one as well. Billy Bob is the best actor working. Care to disagree?

Bewitched - I just saw this to see Will Ferrell freak out and to see Carrell imitate Paul Lynde. I wasn't let down. Otherwise, it's just a cable film.

War of the Worlds - Great special effects. That's about all I can say for it. Otherwise, it's a master storyteller's worst day. There is no story really. Aliens came to kill people and they've been planning it for years. Tom Cruise's family is dysfunctional. That's about it. There are far too many convenient scenarios in the film, too, such as Cruise's ability to always have a driving path . . . even through the wreckage of a 747. Amazing. An incredible let down of a film.
