I guess I need to preface that I never read the graphic novels and/or comic books that inspired this film. I am a fringe comic book fan who read a lot as a non-driving teenager, but didn't read much after that. I am familiar with Frank Miller's work. I read his Dark Knight Returns series and his work on Elektra, so I knew the kind of gritty, noir type of writing he prefers. However, I wasn't really prepared for the content of this film. That's not to say I didn't enjoy it, because I did, but some of the violence, gore and graphic images I didn't know were in there. The only thing that really saved me is that a caught an article in the Cleveland Plain Dealer in Saturday's paper from a local metro reporter (who also reviews comic books) and kind of clued me in on what I was in store for.

I am surprised this movie earned an R rating. I know it didn't get its final approved rating until less than 2 weeks before release, so there must have been some serious chopping to get it in for an R. Seeing what was left in, I can only imagine what didn't make the cut. I don't want to sound like a prude, because I'm not (at least I don't think I am), but a guy getting his dick ripped off would most likely churn even the staunchest of constitutions.

The trailers cannot do this film justice. They make the picture look a comic book come to life with stylized action in a noir setting. That's basically correct, but it is much more graphic than that. I love Robert Rodriguez. Desperado and From Dusk Til Dawn are 2 of my favorite movies. I know some people dislike Rodriguez for his over-the-top action style and others write him off as a Tarantino wannabe, but that really is selling this guy short. He knows how to make entertaining movies and film visually stunning scenes.

O.K. enough of that. Let's get to what I liked about this movie. First and foremost, Mickey Rourke. The guy is F'N fantastic in this. Rourke was born to be in this movie. He just tears it up as "Marv" the disfigured hard-ass with a heart of gold. He gets some of the best lines and his gravily marble-mouthed delivery is perfect for executing them. Bruce Willis does a nice job as "Hartigan" one of the only non-corrupt cops in (Ba)Sin City. Not much of a stretch from his "Butch" role in Pulp Fiction, but that's his niche and he fills it nicely. Clive Owen is guy I'm growing to like and he doesn't dissappoint either. Nikky Katt (of TV's Boston Public and Boiler Room) steals his only scene as a bald-headed neo-Nazi(?) assassin.

Also appearing in this film are Michael Clarke Duncan (OK), Nick Stahl (gross), Elijah Wood (TOTALLY creepy), Rutger Hauer (always the go-to guy for evil), Powers Boothe (not bad), Benicio Del Toro (almost unrecognizable) and Michael Madsen (wasted).

A couple of things I didn't care for. Basically all of the women. When the men delivered the noir dialogue, it fit in, but when the women did it, it sounded cartoony; like Bugs Bunny was going to hop into the picture. Rosario Dawson, Jessica Alba, Brittany Murphy, Jaime King and Carla Gugino (nice rack!) were the main culprtis. The only woman I enjoyed was the girl who played the Asian assassin. Probably because she didn't talk, but she was hardcore bad-ass.

Highly Recommended for those who like GRAPHIC violence and disturbing images. Recommended for those who liked Kill Bill. Not recommended for pregnant women whose hormones are out of whack.
