I think Lucas's biggest mistake is that he didn't write all nine, or have some idea of what would occur in each, the day he wrote the script for A New Hope. That's the way I would've done it.

The Phantom Menace is largely useless. Also, you'd think Darth Maul would be far more capable with the lightsaber than Count Dooku, yet Obi Wan defeated Maul (despite Maul having the "high ground") and was smashed twice by Dooku.

I know that understanding of the Force is also an influence in swordplay, but Maul was physically capable, which is something Lucas mentioned when writing that bout, that it was meant to showcase the Jedi at their peak, as opposed to the battle of Geriatric versus Machine we got in A New Hope, (not Lucas's exact words there, though).

Also, I thought Lucas made a mistake in not carrying the same Sith apprentice throughout, and one who'd inevitably be overthrown by Anakin. Again, that should've been the intimidating Maul, as opposed to the ancient Dooku.

As an aside, I thought Dooku's death in Sith was premature and meaningless. Anakin killing him should've been to assume the mantle of Sith apprentice. That would've been more logical, and also tied in with Jedi.

But back to the prequels - Menace is useless, and the first half hour of Attack of the Clowns (as we call it) is really cliched, i.e. the assassin uses bugs to try kill Padme, the obligatory car chase through the city, the assassin killed moments before disclosing the identity of her boss, etc.

That could've all been done away with and covered in the opening intro, that following a number of assassination attempts Jedi Apprentice Anakin Skywhiner had been assigned to protect Amidala, and Obi-Wan Kenobi had been sent to investigate rumors of a Clone army. There, one paragraph instead of 30 minutes of bad film.

The rest of the flick was okay, and Sith should've been split in two, the first part ending with Anakin becoming the Emperor's apprentice, the third part being the hunting down of the Jedi and the pregnancy of Padme, (which could've occurred years later even if Anakin had turned - he and Padme could've briefly reconciled).

Disagree about Lord of the Rings, though. Visually stunning, but Peter Jackson should be mauled (and mauled worse than Lucas) for his adaptation.

I actually wrote rants for the way he screwed up each book. If you're interested (but be forewarned, they're epics in themselves), they can be found at http://www.angelfire.com/oh4/archives/02universal/lotrcritique.html - have a pop-up blocker handy, though, as it's an Angelfire server.

In any case, I'll forgive Lucas because he screwed up his own work. Jackson? He's got some nerve rewriting Tolkien. It might be necessary in the case of condensing the story, etc., but some times he seems to do it for no reason at all, and that's why I think the trilogy failed (and failed pretty badly).
