I went in preparing to hate it because of Leonardo DiCaprio (who I wasn' exactly of a fan of at the time) and because the movie was promoted as this overdone romance. But I was extremely impressed. There's also a pretty strict adherence to the facts in regards to the sinking (down to First Officer Murdoch shooting himself, which is one of the rumors of his fate).

Addressing DoW's comment that it's a bit disrespectful ignoring all the true stories from the sinking and going with a fictional one to underpin the story, wouldn't it have been just as (if not more) disrespectful to pick one true story and ignore the rest, as if that one was more important?

As for Billy Zane, liked him. Thought his performance suited the character and times. If anything, his overacting seemed an attempt to compensate that he'd been written such a one-dimensional villain.

In an earlier draft, Bill Paxton and the others are actually there when the old Rose drops the Heart of the Ocean into the ocean. Thought that was an interesting change, but I guess it was meant to be a private moment.

Lastly, if you want an essentially blow-by-blow factual account of the sinking (other than for the ship splitting in two, which wasn't known at the time) check out 1958's A Night to Remember.

  • I don't think people hate it. I think people are just annoyed by WHY other people liked it -- Rocket, 01:19:51 11/24/05 Thu
