Titanic is not a bad movie, by any stretch. It's a good solid high-quality film.

I believe the critics of Titanic are probably more resentful of the film's popularity, than they are of the film itself.

Although the film appealed to many demographics, teenage girls with a crush on Leonardo was a large part of that demographic (at least as far as the people that saw the movie multiple times in theaters). That can affect the perception of true cinema lovers.

I kind of feel this way about Home Alone... much more so than Titanic. I saw Home Alone in theaters, and thought it was a cute and fairly entertaining flick. It completely blew my mind when it went on to become one of the highest grossing films of all time... beating out true classics like Raiders of the Lost Ark... etc. I just didn't feel it was good enough to deserve such a prestigious spot in movie history. That kind of made me resent it.
