There's a list of guys I think are overrated because regardless of how good they portray their characters, they have their own set of mannerisms and idiosyncrasies which re-impose reality back upon you. Amongst these guys are:

Al Pacino - it seems he's always written some diatribe to spout passionately at the end of every film he's in. Like The Recruit. At the end of it he just begun one of those monologues you've come to expect of him which makes you think, Pacino!

Robert De Niro - he's just about always arching his brow, doing that crooked frown, and repeating himself. To be fair, though, I saw him recently in a film called Hide and Seek in which he was magnificent because he played it very understated and without all his idiosyncrasies.

A quick note - I think Pacino and De Niro (and Jack Nicholson, for that matter) were awesome when they were younger, but it's like they feel they don't have to act anymore, instead drawing on their range of expressions and tones as if they were little more than costumes to be put on. I think that's the thing - they've become very formulaic.

Agree with Tom Cruise. He always has that eye-thing happening when he's trying to be serious. Don't mind Cuba Gooding. Greg Kinnear and THomas Haden Church are like Clooney, effectively playing themselves.

Somebody else whose popularity I could never understand is Julia Roberts. I don't think she's a very good actress, or even than pretty, and yet she's made a tremendous career for herself.
