Not bad, but nothing great. I really enjoyed Get Shorty. I thought it was sharp, nicely acting with good dialogue and a plot with twists that kept you on your toes. It's actually one of my favorite films, so I was looking forward to seeing this. I will also admit to being a sucker for The Rock. Hey, I'm a wrestling fan and I like seeing "one of the boys" be successful.

This movie lacked the spark of the original. It wasn't as clever and smartly written. It didn't take itself too seriously as it poked fun of everything it was about, but it seemed like it was more interested in making the people involved with the film chuckle instead of its audience. John Travolta is cool as Chili Palmer and I had no problem with him at all. Cedric The Entertainer is good as an Ivy-League educated mixmaster who seems torn between being a good father and a good gangsta. Vince Vaughn goes WAY over the top as a wigger music executive who is looking for respect from his music peers as well as street cred. Vaughn actually provides the biggest laugh-out-loud moment of the movie and I give him credit for being game for just about anything, including hanging from 30 stories and being set on fire. Those were the highlights.

Uma Thurman I'm not a big fan of and she does nothing here to change my mind. Harvey Keitel looks like he's been working out and just wants to show off his new pipes. Andre Benjamin (of OutKast) can't decide if he's trying to be a bumbling gangsta or is smarter than everyone in the room (sort of a hip-hop "Kramer"). Christina Milian the real-life singer who plays Linda Moon, the center of everyone's trevails, doesn't do much for me. James Woods pretty much plays himself. Trust me, if you've ever heard Woods give an interview, this was exactly what he sounds like.

Finally, The Rock. I don't mind him playing against stereotype and it's probably good for his career. But for goodness sake give the guy something to do! Totally wasted in this part. His eyebrow should have been give the billing instead of him because that part of his face was featured better than him. I think the joke that he was gay was all there was. It was like, hey The Rock is playing a gay guy, isn't that FUNNY? The first half of the movie, he said about 2 lines and got his ass beat by Travolta. The Rock isn't going to kick ass once? Forget he was gay, he was a bodyguard, for crying out loud. Talk about wasted potential.

Final note. Robert Pastorelli is in this. He died March, 2004. Almost exactly one year before this film's release date. How long has this movie been sitting on the shelf?
