Subject: A problem I have with "whodunnits"...

A couple of weeks ago, I was watching Blood Work.

Clint Eastwood plays a retired FBI profiler who investigates an unsolved murder. The murderer isn't revealed until the end...but you know who it's going to be because the second biggest name in the cast is Jeff Daniels. And having said that, for 97.5% of the movie, Daniels plays Eastwood's neighbor.

Geez, I wonder who the killer will be - will it be some total unknown, or Jeff Daniels?

This is my problem with whodunnits. Casting gives away who's who because obviously Hollywood isn't going to cast high-profile actors as red herrings. They should, but don't.

The only thing close to an exception was Se7en where Kevin Spacey refused to be billed in the opening credits because he said audiences would work out that if Morgan Freeman and Brad Pitt were the cops, then he had to be the bad guy. Smart guy.

But otherwise?

It's deduction by billing.
