As an activist - oh hell, let me correct that - as a fucking RADICAL activist I've had my share of experiences with people that I refer to as "closet friends."
You know what I'm talking about. They were the socially insecure wannabes back in Jr. high who were soooo scared to associate with anyone who had an ounce of individuality, anyone that the "cool" people might not approve of!
But when no one "cool" was around or looking, they were right there wanting to be your best friend, especially if you had something they wanted or needed!
As an activist, excuse me, I mean - as a fucking RADICAL activist - I have encountered this type so many times in our local gay organizations.
One time I had a publicity whore "gay leader" get up and grandstand, steal the headlines and take the credit so many times, while trying to pretend he didn't even know me (after I GAVE him the entire presentation on a platter and even PAID for the permits, provided the stage, the sound system, the publicity, the signs, everything except the clothes he was wearing). But he made a good cover boy.
And even as he was denying me, he came over and asked me to help him yet one more time. He asked me to physically protect his b/f while he was up on stage soaking up the spotlight. HAHAA.
It's always amazing to me, that the people who try to pretend they don't even know me in public, are ALWAYS the first to ask me to help them whenever they get in trouble or they need something.
Usually I will help anyone, but lately I've been a little more pressed for time and where these "closet friends" are concerned, I decided, "Fuck it. Just say 'no'."
And you know what, you might think, maybe they will realize, that what goes around comes around, you reap what you sew, your actions have consequences, and you should treat people the way you would like to be treated by them.... blah blah blah
Yeah right! Get real. HAHA! They'll just say I'm being a totally selfish bastard. ...so cry me a river.
Actually one of the songs on my new CD pretty much says it all for me about this kind of situation.

I LOVE THAT LYRIC! HAHA. It's soooooo ....sensitive.
And Mitchell, damn you, you know what I'm talking about so don't be playing the innocent victim. HAHAHAAA!
