Media Release 12 August 2001
INTEGRATED TICKETING A STEP CLOSER
The Department of Transport today announced the preferred proponent to develop a state-of-the-art smart card integrated ticketing system for public transport in greater metropolitan Sydney, a spokesman said.
Integrated Transit Solutions, a consortium comprising ERG Ltd and Motorola, has been selected as the preferred proponent to design and build NSW's integrated ticketing system.
"One card integrated ticketing will make significant customer service improvements by making it easier, safer and much quicker to access all forms of public transport," the spokesman said.
"A key benefit of having just one ticket for all forms of public transport, both public and private, will be that instead of queuing up for a ticket, your preferred fare can be automatically loaded onto your smart card when it is required.
"Additionally, the smart cards will be 'contactless', which means they do not need to be swiped through a machine. Instead, they only need to pass a 'validator' in the entry/exit area to ensure passengers can continue their journey with little interruption.
"The smart card will not need to be removed from a wallet or bag. It only needs to pass the validator, which will signal acceptance of the fare. That means people don't have to fiddle and fumble for their tickets, just walk through the validator with the smart card ticket in your possession, which is an added security feature."
The one ticket system will apply to all transport modes in the greater Sydney, Hunter and Illawarra regions, reaching as far as Lithgow in the west and Goulburn in the south west.
A single smart card will provide a greater incentive for people to leave their cars at home and take public transport. It will enable travel on all CityRail, light rail, monorail and private and public bus and ferry services.
The next step is to negotiate a contract with the Integrated Transit Solutions consortium to design, build and operate the system.
After the NSW Department of Transport finalises a contract and costs with the preferred proponent, the new integrated ticketing system will be designed, built and then phased in from mid 2003, with full implementation expected by early 2005.
