I was just reading some medical studies re: allerpet vs. washing your cat. It said that neither process made any difference!! We want to get a cat, but have friends that are very allergic, and we don't want this to become a problem when they are in our home. Any thoughts?

I used Allerpet on my cat that I just adopted on Saturday because my boyfriend said he was allergic.

The only allergic reactions he has had is when he touches his eyes...they get itchy and watery.

So, either Allerpet works, or he is not as allergic as he thought.

I can totally understand if a person or couple have allergies to cats, being hesitant about getting one and trying methods to control the allergies.......but when it comes to people wanting a cat but questioning getting one because friends have allergies, I don't get that. Okay, I'm biased..I have 6 cats LOL

I have a brother inlaw who's supposedly VERY allergic to cats (cough cough). He's a great guy, but the way I see it, tough titty said the kitty. If he feels he can't come to my home for dinner or whatever, oh well. 6 cats vs 1 man, cats win LOL

If you really want to bring a cat into your life (the shelters and SPCA and Humane Societies are FULL to the brim with poor kitties who need homes so badly/or will be put to sleep), I say do it. How much time do your friends spend at you house anyway? I imagine they're not there THAT often?? If you get a cat, couldn't you simply have it so that you visit them instead of them visiting you?

People allergies to cats really do vary, and it also seems to vary with the type of cat.

A couple of months ago, I had a lady come to my house to do my CPR Recertification. Prior to her coming over, I'd asked if she was allergic to cats (but didn't say how many I had). She told me that 1 cat wouldn't bother her, but 3-4 would. Well, I know I'm a good housekeeper, so I vacuumed big time, dusted, put all the cats in a spare room while she was there. When we were done, I asked her if she was bothered at all with her allergies. She said she felt great. I then told her to follow me.....and I took her up to my spare bedroom and showed her the Zoo LOL. She couldn't believe it!

My brother inlaw, he has been to my house for dinner. I just vacuum and dust really good beforehand...then lock the cats up. He has no symptoms at all. I know, because when I was in my late teens/early 20's, I was extremely allergic to cats. If I stepped foot into a house with just one cat, within 5 minutes my eyes were watering, itching...I became a little wheezy, and if I touched my face after touching anything that may have come into contact with the cat, I'd get big hives and welts. My eyes would get all bloodshot, too.

Now here I am, 10 yrs later and 6 cats....and no problems whatsoever. It started with having one cat. Yeah, I did suffer some, for a couple weeks...but I took Chlortripolon ND (non drowsy) faithfully for these 2 weeks and then I was fine. I've been fine since. I know I still have a mild reaction/allergy...cuz if one of my cats ever accidentally scratches me, I get a HUGE welt where the scratch is, immediately.

My advice would be to get a cat, regardless of your friend's allergies. Cats needs homes so badly, GOOD homes. And honestly, for some people, Allerpet-C DOES work.

Who the hell cares if your friends are allergic, they don't have to pet the cats when they come over then! :) Don't NOT get a cat (or two:)) just because your friends come over from time to time and they're allergic.

I'm allergic to cats and dogs, AND I'm asthmatic, and I've always lived with both - and never bathed my cats or used Allerpet. If your friends are super allergic tell them to take a Claritin before they come over to your house, and they'll not want to pet the cats.
