Subject: Happy fourthe

I have tomorrow and Friday off and don't usually access this board at home, so I probably won't be on until Monday.

I did want to wish everybody a happy fourth of July. It's always a good time to reflect on how lucky we are to live in these parts, whether it's the US or Canada. There are so many spots in the world still under dictatorships or other dreadful conditions. As much as I may complain about one President or another, I never forget that living in a democratic(small d) system where I can complain when I feel like it without worry of arrest is something that many people do not have. We are very fortunate to live under a system where people are allowed to make a difference and to voice their opinions freely. We are very lucky to live with freedom of religion and cultures and with a free press.
Always remember that there is a difference between patriotism and blind patriotism and even after 09/11, you should feel free to criticize what the government does wrong. That is your right and an obligation and being grateful to live in a very good country never means that you should accept what any leader, or the courts or the press for that matter, says uncritically. And please remember to vote in primaries if you have the chance. By the time of general elections, you can be stuck with a tweedledee/tweedledumb choice if you haven't participated before then.
At any rate, I wish you a happy independance day!

Yes, most places in the world are far worse then the US. The US is a great nation, a great place to.

However, on this day, instead of blind obedience to the government, we need remember that the founding fathers were rebels themselves. They were rebels against a rule they felt was immoral and unjust. And England law and rule was at the time one of the most democratic in the world. But they still rebelled and created something better.

Patriotism is not the blind acceptance of bad laws and bad leaders, but active work to change what you can change for the better.

I, for one, do not accept the idea of wars without end against an enemy who is not defined, or better yet, a Saudi enemy we invite to barbaque at our ranch in Texas.

Nor do I believe it is patriotic to involve future generation of Americans to the immorality of Israel's ethnic cleansing wars. I believe American children should become doctors before they become gunmen, not the other way around.

And I always vote. I earned that right.

You need a REAL sense of humor. Your stamina re: this Johnny-one-note issue is fascinating. It's been almost three years since I started posting on the Hearth, and you've been saying the same two or three things in myriad different ways at least since then!

But, happy Fourth. Drink a fifth -- you'll feel better.

It would be far more interesting to you if I talked about Sharon having sex with 700 women and children at Sabra and Chatilla instead of Sharon killing 700 women and children.

If I posted something about Bush having oral sex, I would see your interest spark. But this is borring real politics of murder and killing... nothing interesting.

I don't believe in blind obediance to any leader. Presidents, Senators, Congressman are all supposed to work for the people, not the other way around. I said in the original message that there is a difference between patriotism and blind patriotism and that people should always feel free to criticize the government and it's leaders. On this point, I think you and I are in fairly complete agreement. We might not agree on which policies to criticize, but that's not the point. It's just good to live in a country where we are even allowed to have these debates. There are still far too many countries in the world where you can get arrested for expressing your opininon either verbally or in writing.

And KJ, it's true that Mark has some favorite subjects that he can post about in various moods and styles and words, but I think he's somewhat better at staying on one point than he was on DP. He's even managed to go several threads without blaming all of the world's problems on Laura Schlessinger! :-)

Good to see you!

Hope you had a great 4th. As for freedom, enjoying it is great, but the other side is to make sure not to take it for granted. There are so many people in the world who would love to be as free as us. I hope after 09/11 that people at the very least take the time to vote.

Yes, I had a wonderful 4th, just a lot of memories from my previous military and Government experience I think about. Family members who gave there life and call to duty. I have been able to look at the sacrifices they made as for the American freedom and it sooths me.
No, 9/11 will be here for a while, and it will get nastier before it gets better, some of these Muslim countries are going to wake up to the fact that democracy is a way better life, it will take years yet to come, but I believe the end results will come forth for a better world. Now we need to combat drugs with education, help for the addicted and school to get them on their feet for a working class citizen.
So, hope all have a remaining nice year and better ones yet to arrive..

Only problem is, America will get worse before it has a chance to get better. We cannot get better before 2004 unless we manage to impeach the idiot.

We are a country in a deep recession, at war without end, and led by a retard!

God Save America - I will pray for all American men and women in uniform. It has to be a horrible faith to be lead in war by an idiot who has no problem sending others in harms way, while he himself, with the help of his dady has managed to stay safe from the slaughter of 50,000 others in his generation.

I agree, Clint. We need education and help for the addicted in the war against drugs. The war has not been fought sensibly. We focus too much on the supply side, not the demand. I agree that we need to do everything we can to help addicts recover and lead productive lives. You can never win the war against drugs by focusing solely on drug producing nations.

A couple of other points. I think there are a number of people in Muslim countries, especially those who have been to college here who know that Democracy is a better way of life. The trouble is that the majority of Arab countries are dictatorships where people are not allowed to express this opinion too openly if it threatens the top rulers. It takes a lot of courage in most of the Arab countries to speak out for human rights.

And a quick word of thanks, Clint for your service to the nation. Especially after 09/11, it's important to thank people.

Just like with drinking or sex, puritanism is a social perril. You cannot save people from themselves. I think most drugs should be legal and the proceeds taxed so programs can be funded for treatment.

But there is too much money in keeping drugs illegal, so I doubt it will happen.

By the way, I read that Afganistan is going to have a bumper crop of poppy this year, with the Taliban ousted.

Good job Dumbaya! Can't find Osama, but you can sure shoot million dollar missiles at cammels!

Of course, you can save people from themselves. You just can't do it by arresting people. That's what treatment is - saving people from their own addictions/habits.
We also need to increase educational programs. Maybe have some recovering addicts speak at all schools. People who have been there can sometimes talk other people out of starting.

Wish you one wife just like her. One that f*cked for money in her youth and preaches abstinence at menopause.
