i'm not taking anything away from his talent or condoning dirty players - then or now. BUT, when it comes to regular, rule-book allowable, defensive hockey he was treated differently. maybe it was because he was the league's poster child to an american audience or because he was smaller than a lot of the other forwards and they didn't want him hurt - i don't know. but he WAS treated differently. do you honestly think, someone like rob blake would have been allowed to do his patented (and clean) hip check on gretzky and send him flying through the air? NOT! do you think bryan marchment . . . well, he's probably not a good example because his play is not exactly kosher but i bet if he took wayne out like he did joey neuwendyke, and countless others, he wouldn't be playing in the NHL anymore.

my major beef isn't with wayne gretzky but just the concept that people believe that all hockey is about is offense. well, it's equally about defense and part of defense is body checking. again, i'm not talking about dirty players or cheap shots. but gretzky had played the majority of his career under the instigator rule, i bet you his goal production wouldn't have been what it was. he even complained about the rule when it was put in. ironically, he and i actually agree that this is a bad idea but for different reasons. i say leave the policing to the players, he didn't like big bodies checking his little body with no teammate allowed to take care of the other guy.

anyway, that's my take: bottom line i guess, if we reduce or eliminate all of the bonafide defensive play including body checking etc., we might as well all watch field hockey. thanks for listening.
