!959/1961 working at 3 site (bomb dump) there were twO Javlin landing mishaps both main tyres burst on toutch down (frozen brakes )u/c colapsed slid on it s belly on towards us arming ordinance at the time it slid to a halt 100 yds from us, unable to get to the crew barbd wire , they got out and legged it , and so did we . the next Javlin did same thing ,brought it to a halt held it in a straight line ,towed away working at that site you had a vested intrest in any thing toutching down.

I was a member of the Crash Crew that attended the Jav crash. I distinctly remember it slewing to 'port' off the runway {27?}, and heading towards the BombDump. It stopped short of the barbed wire; there was no fire. The crew got out sharpish, maybe one damaged a leg jumping down. We had been warned it was a "one wheel up" coming in, so we were well placed, and followed it onto the "rough". No foam was used, no crash axes either. The i/c of the crew rhat day was a Scotsman, Cpl Tam Ferrie - a cool guy. The pilot did a good job landing and stopping the plane. It was, from memory, a hot afternoon. There was no panic anywhere, although the pilot could be excused a few palpitations at the thought of landing such an unwieldy-looking bird. We also had a Gannet squad of three aircraft. One crashed and burned outside the perimeter. The othwer two crashed elsewhere. A stubby dangerous looking lump of a kite. Navy owned, I think.
