Before I got on broadband, I had alternatives to hear or save music.

First, if you want to just hear a song, if it's popular, there are LEGAL streaming juke box & top music sites that will let you listen to a low-fi version of the song with an ordinary dialup connection, or a digital quality version on broadband. Some sites only allow seconds or a minute of the song, some allow the full version, so you'll have to google around.

On broadband, the full version may be just as good quality as the CD, so record it if it sounds good to you.

Cable TV, & sattelite. If you have them, or off the air TV music channels, you're already getting CD quality, hiss-free music. Record them on your computer or "other" devices.

Devices & techniques:

Most modern hi-fi stereo VCRs & just about all super-vhs machines will record any audio in CD quality. A few in true digital (esp s-vhs)too. DAT recorders & tapes borrowed the technology from VCRs! Just use the high speed & good tapes. Some VCRs at the slowest speed won't record CD quality, but better quality than typical FM radio. A 10 hour vhs tape will record over 3 hours & 20 minutes fine at the high speed. An 8 hour tape will record 2 hours & 40 minutes on high.

Just tune in your favorite music channel most likely to play the songs you want, uninterrupted, put in a tape, & record the whole thing. Later, pick out the songs you want to keep on the tape, & burn 'em onto your drive or a cd.

They even make external, stand-alone, CD & VCD burners at reasonable prices! No computers, programming or wiring wizards required!

Use data CDs & settings NOT audio. Data CDs cost pennies & you can record 170-200 songs on 1 disk. Audio CDs cost 10-20 times more because the extra money goes to the riaa. You'll only fit 10-15 song on 'em because audio CDs are recorded in MP1 technology that's over 20 years old. Audio CDs & CD players are going the way of vinyl records & record players. A data CD full of MP3s will play on most modern DVD players. Good MP3 & multi-codec disk players can be bought for $23-$34, most of which can fit in your pocket.

5" standard data disk players will fit in a coat pocket or purse, but will be a tight fit in pants pockets. I use a $34 I-river multicodec (it'll play anything) one I bought from Amazon.com. It's my favorite music source. I even plug it into big-club systems. 2-AA batteries last about 16 hours! 100 blank disks for $15.99

I also got a 3" MP3 memorex disk player for $24. I get 70-100 songs on 1-3" disk & the tiny player easily fits in any pocket. The 3" disks are compatible with any 5" burner. 100-3" disks for $12.99.

You can also get songs from your friends or people down the street. Most are happy to trade songs & copies, & you don't have to get online worring about the riaa busting your children.
