hi betty, the long awaited first prosecutions of file sharers in britain have been announced. the dti (department of trade and industry)is going to target serious uploaders only at this point meaning people who have in excess of 600 cd's worth of material to share.
the thing is, i can't see what the fuss is about. if anything file sharing is increasing interest in music and prompting people to buy cds it has certainly had that effect on me. i liken it to the radio, we all listen to music radio at times and if you hear a song you like enough you buy it, so why wait for your station to get round to playing it. in the past as a teenager i'd have recorded it on a cassette player...then bought it if i liked it enough. so file sharing is very similar. you put up with a poor quality version of your fave song until you get fed up and buy the thing. also being in my forties i like to remanisce a bit, download stuff that i used to have on vinyl or tapes, led zep, neil young, the smiths whatever, it's a hell of lot easier to press a key or a mouse button than look under the bed for old formats.
anyway the main reason for file sharing for me is i can get episodes of seinfeld on demand (hard to get in england, why i don't know? it's comedy greatness!)
